Gifted Services at Mountainside
Welcome to Mountainside Gifted Services

Lois Sugar, Gifted Specialist

Independent Investigations is a semester long course open to all gifted learners offered in a three-year rotation of Architecture, Visual Images, and Engineering. There is an emphasis on non-verbal or spatial intelligence as well as on hands-on, open ended, authentically assessed activities. The heart of the program is building critical thinking skills, problem solving skills, and the habits of mind, which lead to both. Students also explore what it means to be a gifted learner. Each semester culminates with an open house allowing students to share their work with families and guests.

All Gifted Students....
are strongly encouraged to take Independent Investigations for one semester, each year. Please make sure to request I.I. on your course request forms. It is essential that we challenge our gifted learners and have them interact with other gifted students. This year's content focuses on Engineering and next year's will focus on Visual Images.
